v1.5.31 - Accent legibility and hero joins
Accent link underlines now stay visible when your brand colour is close to your page colour, post bylines are readable on coloured headers, and a coloured card at the top of a page now truly meets the header image.
New features
- Accent link underlines now stay visible. The underline on an accent-coloured link — the author and tag links beneath a post title, and the sign-in links — switches to black or white when your accent is too close in shade to whatever sits behind it. It judges against the right surface too: a link under a post title on a coloured header is compared against that header, not the page. See Branding: logo, accent colour and the black-or-white case.
Bug fixes
- The author and date line under a post title is now readable on a coloured header. If a post's header had a background colour of its own, that line kept the colour scheme's own shade and could end up invisible against it — on a black header in light mode it was exactly the background colour. It now follows the header the way the title already did.
- A coloured card at the top of a page now meets the header image properly. The previous release closed most of this gap but left a thin band of page colour in the join. It is now flush.
- A post excerpt is now spaced correctly beneath a coloured header. Where a header has a background colour that differs from the page, the excerpt was sitting hard against its edge. It now keeps the same distance from that edge as it keeps from the byline when the header has no colour — so the two arrangements read alike at every screen size.
- The ring around a callout's emoji follows the callout again. On a coloured callout it could be drawn in hard black, which matched neither the callout nor the page.
- The line under a post's excerpt has its spacing back on phones and tablets. On screens narrower than 1280px it was sitting directly against the excerpt text with no gap at all.
- Dividers take less space. A horizontal divider had grown very large on wide screens — more than any other block in the theme — which made it dominate the page rather than separate it. It is now noticeably tighter at every screen size, and still scales up as the screen gets wider.
Under-the-hood improvements
- Accent colours are judged against the surface they actually sit on, rather than always against the page. This is the same rule the theme already applied to buttons on header and signup cards, now extended to link underlines and the byline.
