v1.5.41 - Feature grid image shapes

Feature grid images no longer have to be widescreen. You can now set a grid to square or portrait instead, using the same three shape settings the feature tab bar already had — so there is one set of shape words to learn rather than two.

Nothing changes unless you ask it to. A grid you have already built keeps its widescreen images exactly as they are; widescreen is still what you get when you say nothing.

New features

• Choose the shape of a feature grid's images: widescreen, square or portrait. Square suits product shots, app screens and anything photographed head-on; portrait suits people, book covers and phone screenshots, which lose most of themselves in a widescreen crop. The shape applies to the whole grid rather than to individual cards — that is what keeps the headings across a row lined up with each other. It works with every arrangement, including the swipe row and the self-scrolling strip. See Feature grid.

• Images are still cropped from the centre to fill whichever shape you pick, and Ghost's product card offers no way to choose which part survives. The practical advice is unchanged and now matters more, because there is more than one shape to match: upload pictures already cut to the shape the grid is set to. Portrait is worth a second look before you commit to it — at full width on a desktop it gives each image a great deal of height, three across, which is right for a row of faces and too much for a row of screenshots.

Icon grids and logo strips are unaffected. Both keep each file's own proportions on purpose, and a shape setting on one of those does nothing.
