v1.6.0 - Cover hero and Compact hero

The two template families are renamed, and every post assigned to the old names needs re-picking. Plus card images that keep their own shape, a choosable feature-grid ratio, and the licence agreement now ships with the theme.

This release renames both post-template families, and that is a change you have to act on. Editorial becomes Cover hero, and Support becomes Compact hero. Ghost remembers a post's template by its filename, so when the old names stop existing, every post and page you had assigned to one quietly falls back to the default layout — no error, no warning, and most visibly it loses its table of contents.

The new names describe what the templates do rather than what they are for: a cover hero puts the feature image behind the title, full width; a compact hero puts it below the title, as a block in the page. That is the one thing that genuinely differs between them, and unlike a purpose it cannot go out of date.

It also gathers everything since v1.5.35 into a single release.

New features

  • Choose the image shape in a feature grid. Three options — widescreen, square, or portrait — set per grid. Existing grids are unchanged and stay widescreen. See Feature grid.
  • The nested, every-level table of contents is now a Compact hero option. A contents list that deep suits a long reference document, which is what the compact layout is for. See Post templates.

Bug fixes

  • Header and Signup card background images keep their own shape instead of being cropped to a wide rectangle. Upload a tall picture and the block is tall. This changes every card that has a background image, and usually makes it taller — worth a look after updating if one was cropped to work as a wide strip.
  • A locked post's table of contents no longer lists the paywall. A reader who was not signed in got a contents list whose only entry was the "this post is for members" message. The list now covers the public part of the post and nothing behind the paywall, and is hidden entirely when there is nothing to list.
  • Your post excerpts are back in feeds on locked posts. An excerpt you had written by hand was being discarded from every card and list on the site — but only on locked posts, and only in the feeds, so the post's own page looked correct.
  • Three contrast faults fixed, all reported from live sites: text that came out too pale to read on certain card, hero and accent combinations.
  • Tag lists now appear on every article template, not only the default page layout.

Under-the-hood improvements

  • The theme now states its own terms. The End User Licence Agreement ships as LICENSE inside the theme package and as a separate file in your download, so the agreement you accepted at checkout is readable without unzipping anything. See What your licence covers.
  • Several blocks were rebuilt to run on less JavaScript than before, not more.

After updating, check your post templates. In Ghost, open a post that used Editorial or Support and look at the Template field in the post settings panel. If it reads Default, re-pick the matching new name — Cover hero or Compact hero — and save. Any post that shows the right layout and contents list already is fine and needs nothing.
